Learn More About the Fitwalkers ...fun, fitness & friendship
As you may have guessed by their name, the Albany Fitwalkers are primarily a walking club - a Pacific Northwest chapter of the American Volkssport Association, better known as the AVA. The Fitwalkers are one of over 300 walking clubs that organize more than 3,000 walking events on behalf of the AVA, and all of these events are open to the public. Planning and participating in walking events in and around the Albany, Oregon area, the Fitwalkers always strive for fun, fitness and friendship. Most event walks are family friendly activities, accessible by strollers or wheelchairs, and are open to pets. Everyone participates at their own pace. All members of the Albany Fitwalkers share the love of walking; yet there are many who participate in other AVA recognized activities - or volkssports - such as bicyling, swimming, snow shoeing and snow skiing.
and the American Volksport Association ...moving together toward a healthier America
Volkssports originated in Germany, and has spread to more than 40 countries, and can be enjoyed by everyone. 'Volks' means folks, just regular people! Volkssports are family-oriented, amateur athletic events. They are casual, though well-organized adventures in health, recreation, fellowship and fun. Events vary depending on the location of the chapter organizing the activity. Walks and other volkssport events are planned by local clubs. Many clubs exist in Oregon and throughout the rest of the United States. You don't have to be a club member to participate in Volkssports events, but joining a local club is a way to meet and make new friends with a shared interest in walking, riding bikes, swimming, snow shoeing or skiing, and many other AVA activities.
